The power of women 50+ for companies and society

As ESG agendas increasingly gain space in corporate strategies, leading companies are taking on the commitment to create a more diverse workforce, particularly with gender balance.

This transformation in the world of work has been significant, but progress toward achieving gender equity at all levels remains slow, especially when considering intersectional perspectives and examining the data on women over 50.

In Brazil, according to the General Register of Employed and Unemployed Persons (Caged), over 700,000 professionals over the age of 50 lost their jobs during the pandemic.¹ Despite this, women have shown resilience, even while facing ageism in universities and companies. The case of Patricia Linares, 44, went viral online after she was the target of prejudice by three younger colleagues.²

Cases like Patricia’s highlight the need for the creation of supportive spaces, strengthening, and an appropriate environment for women 50+ to thrive. The Labora community aims to fulfill this objective. Currently, women represent nearly 60% of the 50+ talents who are reinventing themselves personally and preparing to embark on the second half of their professional lives.

In recognition of this movement, last year Labora, in partnership with the British Council, launched the Reskilling Women in Tech – Inclusive Leadership program, which helped more than 40 women 50+ from the Labora community develop their interpersonal skills and advance their careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The demand for the program and the results achieved demonstrate that more and more women 50+ are eager to remain active, productive, and leaders in companies and society.

According to the diversity change management consultancy ImpulsoBeta, gender inclusion, particularly with an age intersectional approach, brings quantitative and qualitative benefits to organizations, such as:

    • Maturity

Women over 50, with their experience in various situations and scenarios, tend to have a broader perspective and flexibility in making important decisions.

    • Example

Who isn’t inspired by someone with a wealth of knowledge? As the saying goes, “knowledge is passed from generation to generation.” Women 50+ offer greater security to the team and are a source of inspiration for younger professionals.

    • Leadership

A leader 50+ provides value and diversity, in addition to making more strategic decisions. Due to her experience, she can better understand market trends and anticipate problems. She also excels in developing interpersonal communication skills and creating a welcoming environment for the team.

Labora, believing in the potential of women 50+ in organizations, has developed proprietary technologies that enable these professionals to requalify themselves and work in flexible formats, offering them well-being, quality of life, and income, while providing better performance and generating social impact for the hiring companies.

“I admire the role that Labora plays in the personal and professional lives of seniors, offering various free courses for upskilling, development, and promoting work opportunities in the flex system. I feel very proud to be part of this community and contribute not only professionally but also as part of this movement to secure our space. We have a lot to contribute, and Labora shows us the way to keep moving forward.” Cristina Credico, a professional associated with Labora.
